Brake fluid ages by absorbing moisture either by diffusion through the brake cuffs or corroded brake lines. When applying brakes frequently, the fluid is subject to pressure that heats up to extreme temperatures, whereby vapour locks can form which will impair the power transfer from the pedal to the brake cylinder.

The brake fluid must undergo periodic tests to calculate the boiling point and evaluate the water content.

The condition and quality of the brake fluid is certified with the accurate and eco-friendly brake fluid tester AQUA 10.

The device simulates conditions typical for vehicle brake systems under routine application. Fluctuations in the fluid, as determined by other system testers by measuring electrical conductivity with a test strip, i.e., copper, are excluded by ROMESS. Precise measurement offers reliable results.

Design and function

Place the brake fluid sample (5ml) with a pipette in the opening provided. A measuring chamber inside the unit contains the sample and will function once the valves are closed manually and the power is switched on. The heat switch is then activated whereby the red control light illuminates. The brake fluid sample is heated to the boiling point during the evaluation. Red light flashing: indicates the end of the heating phase. The red trailing pointer shows the results clearly on the pressure gauge. Once complete, the heater shuts off automatically and is cooled down by a fan. The gauge may release pressure but the trailing pointer remains stationary to collect accurate results. To prevent injuries from scalding steam and fluid, the chamber must not be opened until the green control light illuminates to show that the pressure is below the critical point.

Method of measurement

The quality of the brake fluid is evaluated by the steam pressure generated after maintaining a constant high temperature. You can clearly assess the results by viewing the green-to-red temperature range encircling the pressure gauge.

The following applies: the lower the steam pressure, the higher the quality of the brake fluid.

A steam pressure of 0 to 0.7 bar (10 psi) equals a boiling point in the range between 270°C to 210°C (518° to 410°F), which lies within the dark green sector of the temperature range. This brake fluid is as good as new and need not be changed. The red sector starts at about 170°C (338°F) which equals a steam pressure of 1.2 bar (174 psi); the water content of the brake fluid is too high and therefore, must be changed.

When the evaluation cycle is complete and the green control light indicates that the measuring chamber may now be opened, the unit is to be lifted by the handle on the front side and tilted toward the back; the valves may then be opened and the brake fluid can be emptied from the chamber into the provided catching container.

Since the heating of the brake fluid is affected within a closed chamber, there will be no contact with the brake fluid or concern of inhaling vapors.
