It’s Tyre Safety Month!
This October marks the start of Tyre safety month, a nationwide campaign aimed at raising awareness around the importance of proper tyre maintenance. Taking part throughout the month is a great way to remind everyone just how critical it is to keep our tyres in top condition.
It’s easy to get swept up in the rush of daily life and overlook simple safety checks. However, neglecting your tyres can lead to serious consequences. Whether it’s worn tread, incorrect pressure, or unnoticed damage, poorly maintained or illegal tyres can put yourself, passengers, and other road users at serious risk.
The Numbers
Across the UK over 6 million tyres on the roads are illegal, not reaching safety requirement each year
17% of tyres are illegal when replaced, with 40% being borderline
1 in 5 motorway/A-road breakdowns is tyre-related, which was more than 51,500 in 2024
The AA responded to 620,000 tyre-related incidents last year
21% of those who broke down on motorways believe it could have been avoided with proper tyre checks
Drivers Habits
A recent study by Tyre Safe looked at the behaviour of drivers across the UK, to get a better idea of their attitudes towards Tyre Safety and how they find checking their vehicles are safe for the road.
Only 46% of drivers check tyre pressures at least once a month. (60% of women check less than monthly)
41% of students wait for a warning light before checking
71% say vehicle maintenance stresses them more than relationship issues
35% of young adults feel confident checking their vehicles tyre pressure
59% of drivers have experienced at least one tyre-related issue.
Are My Tyres Safe?
Tyres are all too often seen as a "grudge purchase" and the car driver may not have budgeted for the additional expense when servicing their vehicle.
How important is that small contact patch area of each tyre which keeps the vehicles and its passengers safe? Let's not take these four pieces of rubber for granted. see image
Overlooking, arguebly one of the most important parts on the car can be detrimental to the owner/driver and it's imperative that garage owners have the correct tools and equipment to provide the appropriate services. Keeping the vehicles wheel alignment in check and in accordance with the manufacture's tolerances provides a list of benefits.
Prolonged tyre life- protect your investment, by minimising premature tyre wear.
Correct vehicle handling - keep you and yours safe
