New BMW Wheel Alignment Requirements: Prepare for the July 2027 Compliance Deadline

BMW Group has introduced a new wheel alignment process for authorised BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce service and crash repair centres, bringing new software and hardware requirements for wheel alignment equipment.

The latest changes were introduced through BMW Group Service Information bulletin 03 01 26 (270) in July 2026. The new process is already binding, with a transitional period running until July 2027 to allow workshops to bring existing equipment into compliance.

For BMW Group workshops, this makes now the right time to review existing wheel alignment equipment and confirm that it will continue to support the latest BMW requirements.

What has changed?

The updated BMW wheel alignment process introduces a number of important changes to both software and hardware.

Firstly, wheel alignment systems must be running the latest compatible software, including the Steering wheel level function and support for new BMW wheel alignment target data.

Secondly, the process now requires the use of a wireless electronic steering wheel level compatible with the wheel aligner. This is used to accurately record the steering wheel position, take the measurement into account during the evaluation process and document the result within the final measurement report.

Depending on the equipment currently installed, workshops may also need further hardware modifications or system expansion to ensure full compatibility with the new BMW alignment process.

Why is July 2027 important?

BMW has provided a transitional period until July 2027 to give workshops time to complete the necessary updates.

After this point, new wheel alignment target data for future BMW models will only be supported by systems running the latest compatible wheel alignment software.

This means workshops relying on older or non-compliant systems could find themselves unable to access the required target data for newer BMW vehicles.

BMW is therefore advising workshops to contact their wheel alignment equipment manufacturer or supplier promptly to establish what software, hardware or system updates may be needed.

GEMCO’s BMW-approved wheel alignment solution

For workshops looking to invest in BMW-approved wheel alignment equipment, GEMCO supplies the latest BMW-approved SICE KDS 3D TOP Wheel Aligner as part of our specialist BMW equipment range.

The SICE KDS 3D TOP is designed specifically for BMW Group wheel alignment requirements and provides workshops with an advanced 3D alignment solution supported by dedicated BMW software.

Importantly, the system incorporates the technology required to support the latest BMW wheel alignment process, including an electronic steering wheel measurement solution.

With the new requirements now in force and the July 2027 transition deadline approaching, investing in approved equipment can help workshops prepare for future BMW models while maintaining the accuracy, consistency and traceability expected within the BMW network.

Faster vehicle identification with chassis code

The new BMW process also introduces an optional chassis code method for vehicle selection.

Instead of using the conventional vehicle selection process, technicians can enter the chassis code at the beginning of the wheel alignment procedure, helping to identify the vehicle more quickly and potentially reduce selection errors.

The chassis code applies to vehicle models from model year 2024 onwards, although BMW notes that availability will increase gradually as production plants transition to the new process.

What should BMW workshops do now?

BMW's communication recommends that workshops review all wheel aligners currently being used for BMW Group vehicles and contact their equipment supplier to confirm compatibility.

Any necessary software updates, hardware additions or equipment replacements should then be planned and completed ahead of July 2027 to reduce the risk of disruption or supply and installation bottlenecks.

GEMCO can help BMW Group workshops review their current wheel alignment equipment and identify the appropriate upgrade or replacement solution.

Prepare for the July 2027 deadline

The move to BMW's new wheel alignment process represents an important change for authorised workshops, with greater emphasis on digital measurement, updated vehicle data and documented steering wheel positioning.

With the transition period already underway, workshops should avoid leaving compliance updates until the deadline approaches.
